The most interesting thing that I learned about my decade was that there were a lot of deaths of innocent and famous people. Someone famous was even a murderer. It was really interesting to me because I never would’ve known about these events if it wasn’t for the 8th Grade Exit Project. For example, O.J. Simpson used to be a running back in the NFL. Now he’s in jail. I wasn’t born for most of these events so this was a neat experience.
Americahas changed since my decade because some happenings, such as the bombing of theWorldTradeCenter, have created a hostile and fearful environment inNew York. People inAmericastill fear more attacks, especially after the death of Osama Bin Laden. The bombings and attacks kill innocent people. Therefore, life after my decade has been kind of scary.
I didn’t approach any hardware/software problems during this project. The most problems and issues that I had, was having to go through a lot of blocked websites to only find 1 or 2 good ones. It burned off a lot of time that I could’ve been picking up facts and things as such.
Technology is changing our society by providing us information. Objects like the GPS and UAVs are helping protect Americans. GPSs can easily detect locations on possible enemy projectiles. These pieces of equipment can sometimes find things like bombs. Finding some bombs would be nice to prevent another bombing. Technology is also providing cell phones, which allows people to report some events while in a vehicle or somewhere without a landline.

The Crazy 90s!!!!(view changes)
This is the 8th Grade Exit Project. The research papers will include key information about the tragic and fatal events that emerged in the 90s.
On February 11th, 1990, Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa, was freed after spending 27 years behind bars. Mandela was arrested for illegal exit of the country. This was his second time being arrested. He was first arrested for treason. Despite being in prison for a long time, Mandela was a good, honest man. Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He was a campaigner and fought for what he thought was right. Mandela fought racism. Most of his feelings and thoughts were expressed through speeches. Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 at Mvezo in the Transkei. He is a South African, not an African-American. He loves sports and supports his large family.
On April 29, 1991, a tragic cyclone hit Bangladesh, killing over 100,000 people. The storm took 20 days to hit the coast. Because of Bangladesh’s low, coastal elevation, many towns were flooded. Even the Isha Khan Naval Base was flooded. The cyclone’s storm surge was 20+ feet and the storm hit high tide. It had 225km/hr wind along with the low pressure. It developed in the Bay of Bengal. This was the 2nd deadliest and strongest hurricane/cyclone in Bangladesh’s history. It washed away villages, farms, and crops. Many people were left hungry. About 140,000 people were killed in the cyclone and an amazing 10 million people lost their homes! Majority of the deaths were in the Chittagong area.
The closing of the long-lasting Cold War finally came in 1992. The war was between the Soviet Union and the USA. A big part of the Cold War was a battle to see which super power would conquer space exploration. This was known as the Space Race. The Soviets took an early lead by launching the first man into space in April 1961. On July 20, 1960, USA and NASA worked together to come back by accomplishing mission Apollo 11. They sent Neil Armstrong to the moon and he became the first person to ever step foot on the moon. The war started in the 1945-1948 time-frame. President Reagan was in control during the war and he strongly fought communism. He believed that it threatened freedom everywhere. The war hit hard in the movie industry. Over 500 people lost their jobs. The war ended after the Soviet Union fell apart.
One of the most fatal events in US history occurred in 1993. The World Trade Center was bombed! A terrorist planted a bomb in the parking garage of the WTC and exploded it. Fortunately, only 6 people were killed, but more than 1,000 were injured. The brain behind this attack was Ramzi Ahmed Yousef. His 1,200 lb. bomb failed, as it was intended to make one tower fall on another. Yousef was hoping to kill 35,000 innocent people. The bomb caused about a half-million dollars in damage. Yousef and his associates wanted to blow up 11 commercial airlines. US investigators believed that he had ties to Osama Bin Laden. Yousef was later arrested in Pakistan, and then sentenced to life in prison.
A former dominating running back in the NFL was arrested for double murder in 1994. OJ Simpson killed Nicole Brown Simpson, his ex-wife, and her friend named Ronald Goldman. They were murdered on Sunday June 12th, 1994. The victims were killed by a “sharp force”. OJ Simpson was being driven in the passenger seat, going only 60 mph in a pursuit. He said that he had a gun to his head and that he’d kill himself. The chase ended after 90 minutes. He was then arrested and jailed without bond. When OJ was in court, he was accounted for a lot of crimes. The double murder crime was mysterious until prosecutors discovered a bloody glove that provided them with evidence. During the trial, he was found guilty of robbery, conspiracy, burglary, and assault with a deadly weapon.
Timothy McVeigh, an enraged man, loaded his truck with 5,000 lbs of fertilizers with intent to bomb a building in Oklahoma City. The time of this event was at 9:02 am on April 17th, 1995. McVeigh believed that this was a way of getting back at the government for a standoff that included the FBI. The bomb went off when kids were at school, and parents were at work. It killed 168 people including 19 children. McVeigh was found on a highway without a license. The police then found that he had an unregistered gun. He was then arrested. When he was at the station, he was found with ties to the bombing. After days of investigation, they found that it was a car bomb. It made 9 floors of the 20-year old Alfred D. Murrah building collapsed.
On July 17th, 1996, Flight 800 was shot down. Many people thought that a bomb may have been on board. The plane fell into the Atlantic Ocean after leaving the John F. Kennedy Airport in NYC. All of the passengers were killed. The plane was scheduled for Paris. 229 people were on board. After only 11 minutes in flight, the plane was seen as a fireball. A couple of people that they saw a missile hit the plane. Government spokesmen said that those people were drunks and didn’t know what they were talking about.
On August 31st, 1997, a shock was heard across the world as Princess Diana was killed in a car crash. Her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, was also killed in the crash. Diana died of major internal injuries. Surgeons tried to save her life for 2 hours, but they couldn’t come through. She was pronounced dead at 0300 BST.The Mercedes was being chased by photographers when it banged into a wall. It was traveling 80 mph through a narrow tunnel. Another reason the car crashed was that their driver, Henri Paul, had been drinking and taking drugs before driving. Her funeral was one of the most watched events ever in history. Over 2.5 billion people saw it on TV and more than 1 million people saw it in person. Hundreds of people even went to her house to lay flowers. People everywhere dedicated tributes. Her death created dents in the hearts of a lot of people.
In 1998, Titanic was named the most successful movie. The ship hit an iceberg on April 14th, 1912. More than 100,000 people watched the largest, movable, manmade object. The accident killed around 1,200 of the 1,959 passengers. The capacity wasn’t a problem because the ship could hold 2,435 passengers. It only had 16 life boats and that couldn’t do much for all of the passengers. The movie won 11 nominations form academy awards. It was the most expensive movie during that era. $200 billion dollars could’ve been used for the movie. The movie was made by 20th Century Fox and Paramount. Some awards that the movie won were best picture, directors, actor, and actresses.
JFK Jr. was killed on July 16th, 1999. He was killed while piloting a plane. JFK Jr., his wife, and his sister-in-law were all killed in that single plane crash. He was supposed to drop off his sister-in-law at Martha’s Vineyard. Jr. had 300 flight hours before the accident. The plane had engine problems and it fell into the dark and hazy Atlantic Ocean. JFK Jr. had injured his ankle in sports and it may have been another reason for the crash. The 3 people on board were going to see the youngest of his 11 children. JFK Jr. was only 38-years old.
